IDA HAENDEL
21 and 22 January 2009

“Ida Haendel, doyenne of the violin world, is the last survivor of a musical ‘golden age’ that has remained unparalleled. To those in the know she has a status that is almost saintly. She visits the UK only very occasionally, so don't miss the chance to hear her.”- The Independent

During her first visit to the Razumovsky Academy and Ensemble in December 2007, Miss Haendel agreed to become Patron of the organization, declaring: “I hope that we will be working together in the future and that everyone in London will join in. It’s a very important mission to support music and young talent. And such talent!”

The great violinist Ida Haendel returned for a very special performance at the Wigmore Hall on 22 January at 6pm.

She performed Tartini Devil’s Trill Sonata with the Razumovsky Ensemble and presented the 2009 Ida Haendel Razumovsky Academy Scholarship, to Dmitry Smirnov.

Dmitry Smirnov was born in St Petersburg and is a student at the Rimsky-Korsakov Lyceum in the city. He has already won a number of international awards, including first prize in the David Oistrakh Competition, Moscow, and silver medal in the Yehudi Menuhin Violin Competition of 2008.

The Razumovsky Academy provides the most talented young musicians with tuition from some of the world’s finest artists and teachers. It is not a music college with a set format and curriculum but offers learning in a more flexible way for a smaller number of students. The Academy will present more than 60 events in the 2009 Season including Master Classes with distinguished international musicians and Young Artist concerts and recitals, mainly at the Wigmore Hall, one of the world’s most important recital venues.
